The Best Games of Your Time

As a recent Selkirk grad and with no older siblings or parents that went to Selkirk, I have no idea of what some of the best games of our school are.  I know some of you have some sweet stories about playing football before pads were invented or something.

All I know of Selkirk's history in sports is what Mr. Kinney has told me of his career as a stud athlete.  His stories.... not quite physically possible.

So light 'em up!  Whether you watched them or played in them, let's hear them!                Clint... I know all of your stories ;)

Most memorable for the wrong reason, Homecoming for in 1989. We played Priest River,Id., and they were supposed to be one of the best teams in Idaho for their class. We beat them. Shane Smith got into it with a PR player on the last play of the game, and it was the HS Football equivelant of a bench clearing brawl. I can still remember Rod Cool (now theres a name from the past, remember when he got electrocuted at school?...sorry, drifting off subject...Mr. Cool on the PA yelling for everyone to stop, and not to be stupid.....

Anyone else remember that game?
After thinking, it may not have been homecoming......

Well my sister, Mollee could tell this one better than me since the winning shot was by her, but I'll do a quick recap. And my memory sucks ;) My freshman year so that had to be 99, the girls varsity basketball team went to state for the first time in a LONG TIME. In either the first, or I'm thinking second game cuz I think it was a loser out game, and I don't remember who we were playing ;) (see I told you my memory sucks). But we were down like 2 points and the time was almost up and Mollee made a 3 (i think) and we ended up winning the game at the buzzer...so when Mollee gets on tonight she can clarify this story!! But this is the most memorable game for me in highschool!

Thanks Darc - that was by FAR my most memorable game as well.  But you are right, ur memory DOES suck!!  The girls team hadnt been to state since the year I was born...ha...so it was really exciting.  It was the second game, loser out, winner to trophy round...and it was against Mossy Rock.  I got an offensive board and put it back in at the buzzer to win by 1.  VERY exciting!:)  We ended up taking 8th place in state.  What a memorable year!!  I will NEVER forget it!:)

*Mollee's playoff basket.
*Boys going to state.
*Kibbie Dome.
*Danny Z, against someone at Kettle, in a playoff game, putting the team on his back and scoring a bunch of points. Long time ago. Maybe Danny Z remembers.
*KS tiebreaker game (TX tiebreaker? I don't know). We scored the first time we had the ball and everyone went home happy. Game lasted about 2 minutes.
*Alan Botzheim was a ferocious FB player, one of the best in the state, both at Selkirk and Gonzaga Prep.

I REMEMBER THIS GAME!!!  I was there in that good ol' Arena.  I even wrote a paper about it in Mr. Barnes' class in 6th grade.  It was a good paper too!  Granted I didn't have to come up with a good story on my own...

Do you remember what year (roughly) that KC tiebreaker was?

In response to that Girls State game...I was still in Spokane, and went to that game & the trophy game.  I was able to follow the boys a couple years back when they made it on the internet....

Mr. V.  You don't recall a dude missing home plate twice in the same game in 1985??  We're still pissed!  T.J. Seaver had both of the RBI (he's still REALLY pissed!).  The player shall remain nameless, you'll just have to remember, or ask Mr. Reed).  And, no it was not me.  I walked and hit a double (no kidding! I hit a double!)  Had we won that game, we would've made state.  But dude missed home plate twice (did I mention that we are still pissed?) and we lost by one friggin' run.  Dammit!!

I agree with the 2000 girls state appearance, I remember the Mossyrock game!!!!
Also had a great time watching the boys basketball teams play. There were a few memorable boys' games. 2003 League Championship win (against SGS I believe). The 2004 boys' win against Waterville in the 1st round at state and even the following two losses were great games. Winner-to-state games always exciting!!!! Notably the game at districts my senior year for the boys, winner-to-state against Wellpinit. I hope I am remembering all this right!! Nathan, you probably remember the boys games a little better than I do. It was so nice to see the community rally behind the teams at the 2000, 2004, 2005 state appearances for the girls and boys teams!!!!!! I played in the pep band at all three of them hehehe. Never had a chance to play state basketball...just state softball.

My Sr year we won out homecoming game on a hail mary. Total cliche', 4th and long, from your own 40 yard line. Josh Newman was our QB, but coach Ellsworth in the huddle agreed with us to run a Half back pitch pass. Ryan Haney was our RB, and by far the strongest guy on the team, and the only one that could throw the ball 60 yards.

Wilbur/Creston was our opponent, and when we ran the play, they didn't really bite on the running play. Ryan got hit when he threw it, but still managed to throw it about 45 yards. The DB for WC went up, and instead of  'knocking it down (for you ESPN fans who know what I am talking about) the DB went for the INT. The ball landed in Dusty Smiths hands, and he literally walked into the endzone from the 15 yard line. Ryan still has that (and other) games on VHS, and still breaks it out once in a while. We didn't win alot of games (2, I think)that year, and finished the year with something like 17-18 players, had a ton of injuries....I started out at Rb, and finished the year at offensive line (because of the injuries, I was 160 with pads...those were the days....but I volunteered to play there, since it would "help" the team. I think Ellsworth was shocked when I told him to play me there...but he did it. Sorry, getting off subject, I Have a tendancy to ramble................

That may not have been the most important win in school history, but definately top 5 for dramatic finishes....It made our SR year.

I need to go into more depth with our softball seasons I so quickly mentioned in the favorite teacher section.  Mr V you can correct or add if you will.  Selkirk had not had a softball team for quite a while until Mr V decided to coach my freshman year.  We were so bad!!!!!  We actually lost by 40 some runs and never scored all season.  The next year I think that we cut the runs in half so we may have lost by like 20 runs or so.  The following year we actually won some games and by absolute luck we made it into the district tourney because Northport got caught drinking with their coach.  And by my senior year we were so much better, our pitching especially and we made it to state.  That was awesome and no other coach deserved to take their team to state more!!

And hey, Randy, none of my brothers ever initiated any of the fights that they were involved in:)

I was kidding.  I was talking with Shane not too long ago about all his fights and I know he was not innocent in most of them.  I remember sonny chasing the refs at the playoff basketball game in Kettle Falls.  It was a close game and the ref made a bad call and cost them the game and sonny took off after the ref and chased him into the refs locker room just off the court.  Do you remember that?  I think evertime me and boys reminise it usually ends up with all the fighting that they did.  Sonny is still making his mark in California:)

Well, Nathan, since you asked, and Mandy, since you brought it up, let me tell you about the softball year of '95. I'd begun coaching, saying that, if I couldn't get a team to state within 4 years, maybe they needed a better coach. My first couple years were absolutely miserable, like Mandy said, but little by little by little, we began to jell as a team. Michele Wallis, Dusti Larson, Rachel Sharp, Erin Beacham, Mandy Smith, Tasha Dickinson, Pollianna Dickinson, Kimi Hayden, Laytae Edwards, Katherine Grant, Amber Pichette, Andrea Sarina, Melody Marty, Tara Porter, Beth Weaver, Christy Pichette, Asst. Coach, Joe Villegas, batboy, Mrs. V (book) and honorary captains, Cori Larson and Sandy Gere, because even though they had graduated, they were so faithful to the program early on and were not afraid to take their licks on a struggling team. What a team! The best a coach could ever hope to have. We went into Panorama League playoffs first, and barely escaped out of there 5th. The last qualifying spot for district was us v. Curlew, and of all darn things, the game was called because of darkness, with one out in the last inning, and Selkirk ahead. So, we all had to come back to Kettle to play two thirds of an innning, which we did, and won the final spot into districts. At districts, we qualified for state by finishing 3rd. Our student rooting section was led by Brodie Larson, Travas Fandrey, Shawn Pichette and Jason Pichette, who carried our equipment from dugout to dugout on that hectic day at Franklin Park. We had finally qualified a team for state, and there wasn't anybody I could tell. I finally called Mr. Reed, with whom I had shared baseball heartbreak, and told him the good news. In four years, we had developed a Selkirk team that went from laughing stock to state, and it is one of my fondest memories of any athletic events at Selkirk. If I forgot anyone, I apologize. Put it down to an old man's faulty memory.
End of Part I. Stay tuned.

I remember Johnetta Hader (now Huntley) throwin' a ball at a girls face on an inbounds pass, because she wouldn't back up. I think it was against St. George, Mr Cain would probably remember. It was either his 1st or 2nd year at Selkirk.

Then...Mr Reeves got tired of all the swearing at practices...so he said if you swear, you get kicked out of practice. If you don't practice, you don't play. We had to get creative with our vocabulary.

Cheese n' rice.

I still don't swear (that often)

Saturday, the girl's fastpitch team played an incredible championship game, scoring two runs in the final inning to eke out a 2 run win.  Heather, the MVP of the league, pitched an incredible game and the entire team played extrememly well. We are seeded #1 into Districts Tuesday, at Medical Lake, where we will play Reardan in our first game.  On to state!

I am glad that you put that game on here Randy, that is the one I was going to write about.  I can still remember that game, (but I thought it was the Freeman Scotties that we played in that game??)...............
Anyway, another game that I remember was my junior year in 92, when were playing at districts in a loser out game against NWC and TY Carroll pretty much put the whole team on his back and carried us past NWC (who had beat us twice during the year) into the next game against Liberty which was a winner to state game and loser out.....We lost that game, but I still remember the game that got us there.  I think Ty had like 32 points and 16 rebs, what a game!!!

Yesterday, Tuesday, Selkirk Fastpitch qualified for state with two victories over the Bi-County. In the first game we beat Reardan 2-1 and in the 2nd game we beat Davenport 3-2 to qualify for state. We play Lind-Ritzville on Saturday in the District Championship game. Winner is first to state and loser is 2nd to state. Congratulations, team!!

Mr. V was probably at the games the district fastpitch games and he can probably elaborate more on both one-run wins for the girls team. Selkirk defeated Reardan 2-1 and then beat Davenport 3-2 (scores are usually this tight in fastpitch with good teams) in a winner-to-state game. SO, the girls are GOING TO STATE!!!! and they are playing in the programs first ever district championship game since turning to fastpitch in 2003 which is amazing! Congrats to Cathy, Andy, Craig and all the players!!!! They are a great bunch of girls and I had the pleasure of playing with this year's seniors when I was a senior and they were freshman.

If am not mistaken, this is the 5th season out of 6 seasons that softball has gone to state in fastpitch. This is the first year at state since the WIAA split the B classification up into 2B and 1B.

Selkirk fastpitch is off to state in Yakima on Thursday. They play on Friday, 11:00, against Orcas on Field D. Such exciting times for such a small school. The fan response to this team has been incredible. These girls practically walk on water and everyone stumbles over each other trying to help out and reward them in every way they can. It was the same when we went to state in boys and girl's basketball. This is fun! I will try to keep you updated. Think good thoughts for track and softball on Friday.

Nathan... Dang man good topic. I'd definitely have to say I was blessed with MANY great games in my career at Selkirk. Look at the 2004 season, what a year that was. Finally beating that darn monkey off our back was a huge relief. I still get goose bumps thinking about that game against VC. I can remember going to the state draw and drawing the number one team in state (Waterville). I looked around the room and saw a bunch of people just kind of drop. Not people from Selkirk, but coaches from around the Area that knew our story. It was like jeeze these guy's haven't been to state in 31 years and they get the best team for their first game. Didn't discourage the Rangers at all I can tell you that much. Philip MacArthur was doing a TV interview and the reporter asked him what he felt about drawing the #1 team in state. Phil said told the reporter that in order to be #1 you have to beat everyone. (That's a paraphrase as I don't remember it word for word). Going into that game you could tell that every one of our players knew that we could beat Waterville. I will never forget watching Waterville's half court shot hit the front of the rim and the buzzer sounding. Talk about a crowd going wild. The Selkirk fan's are truly AMAZING.

All I can say about the 2005 winner to state game against Wellpinit is, I don't know how I got the ball to the rim, let alone have it go through the hole. I was scared, the only time I've ever been scared on the court and it had to be in that situation. Watching the freethrow go through the hole was the biggest relief I have ever felt I can tell you that much:) What a season!

I have a lot of great softball stories. I was manager for 2 years before i played so i have many memories for you.
Darcee divin in center for the ball missin it but slippin it in her mit for the game winning or inning ending play.LOL
Dusty hittin the fence in wellpinit
Going to state every year and Mr. A gettin kicked out the the Davenport ( i think it was davenport) game for gettin a lil excited and yelling at there RUDE coach (he had it coming!)
The first year in Fast Pitch going to state and being so new to the game and playing girls who have played there whole life. We tired hard but we were just happy we made it there.
And of course when Mollee Broke her nose at 2nd base and then came back in for the next play to finish the game and play even better then before she got hit (that was Mr. A's famous quote when someone got hurt)
There is so many great times playing softball, starting the season in the gym after Mr. A spent his weekend plowing the snow off the field and having us play in the mud.biggrin.gif

Nicole you are right...the entire freakin town was at those State games.  I remember the article in the local paper prior to those state basketball games telling the last person out of the town to shut the lights off.  It was soo awesome!! I will never forget sports at Selkirk.  And I have SOO many memories from Softball and going to state all the years there.  Cathy, Andy, and Coach Almquist truly are amazing people and I'm SOO happy for Cathy and Andy and their recent success.  They ALL deserve only the best!!
You saying that about me getting my nose broken cracks me up.  I will never forget that..I had blood gushin out the side of my nose, and Almquist thought it was hilarious to take his finger off of it and watch blood squirt oout of it!! ha.
Change jerseys and get back in there!:) haha.
LOVE Selkirk Sports.  So many great memories and SO many great fans and supporters there!!

Just back from Yakima. Girls did great. They had to play Lind Ritzville this morning at 10:00. They were down 7-3 in the bottom of the 6th when, lo and behold, the Rangers scored 5 runs and won 8-7. A really stirring comeback win for a team that could easily have given up. Next up was Liberty, right after the Ritzville game. Our girls played valiantly but simply ran out of gas and lost 4-1. They had a magnificent season and kudos to Andy Anderson, Cathy Enyeart and Craig Larson for their classy, intelligent and patient coaching. Heather Pope ends her season 23-3 and did a great job all year long. She will be greatly missed. Special thanks to the special fans who came out and supported the girls all year long but especially at the tournament at Yakima. It was great.

Rod Cool. What a small world. When I was briefly teaching in Chelan I got to know Rod. He told me a story about the time Ms. Six came to a staff meeting carrying a a broom she was using for a stage prop. He asked her if it was her new form of transportation. He told me she made some comment about him being a dumb stupid ass redneck.
