I will never forget this day...
I had just gotten the best news in my life, that my unborn child (Daughter Maleah) was ok. Dolly was 18 weeks pregnant and tested high for carrying a child with massive birth defects (50/50) and/or down syndrome (1 in 19)...We went to a specialist, Dr. Jackson in Billings. They have equipment that is world class, and were able to assure us that everything was ok. We were relieved. We were on our way back to our hotel when Ryan Haney (Wards 1rst cousin) called me and told me. I had last seen Ward about 4 years earlier, before we moved to ND and before he move to CA......
Not a classmate, but I felt it was appropriate for the page.

My mother, DeeAnn Baker Beatty graduated from Selkirk High School in 1975. She passed away on November 14, 1986 of Brain Cancer. She left behind parents Jim and Janet, sisters Becky, Kathy, and Chris. Husband Frank, children AnnDee, Mollee, Darcee, and Franko. I do not have her obituary since I was only 2 at the time.
My thoughts about Allen Hartt can be seen on the "whatever happened to" page.
As for Wild Bill. That dude was great. The only guy I knew who could go into a room, clean it and it would be dirtier when he left than when he walked in. No matter. He was a really nice guy and always referred to me as "little buddy" or "Mr. T's kid".
I'd get to the school early before a dance to set up the equipment for my D.J.-ing. Wild Bill would always meet me at the door and ask if I was "going to play some of that heavy metal". Then he'd ask me if I wanted a "nip" from his flask of Jack Daniel's. On occasion I would take him up on the offer. Only on occasion, Mr. V., only on occasion...
I saw him a few days before he died at the store he was buying food for his dog everytime i saw him he wanted a huge near the end it was not the easiest thing to do but it always made him smile looking back I am glad I was always there with a hug for him

Wild Bill was awesome, such a good man. We got along so well, I remember he always used to joke around with me for a good laugh. I was sad to read his obituary.
I stumbled across the Bill Ellison obit on accident. I was looking for one for Katherine Maupin (Grant), if anyone has the link please forward or post.
I just thought all of you should know that Amy Kiss passed away today. I don't believe she graduated from Selkirk but she was married to Ryan Kiss--class of 1997 and she was a teacher there.
I have a very sad story to tell about Mrs Kiss ...... Sarah (my oldest) was a freshman when Amy was pregnant with Mary Alice Amy told the class her biggest fear in the world was that Marie Alice would grow up not knowing her mom . as a mom i know this fear and it breaks my heart to know that Mary Alice wont know how truly inspiring her mother was to so many she may be told over and over by others but to be able to watch a parent inspire others ...........

Katherine Suzanne (Grant) Maupin, 29, of Ione passed away on May 20 following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Maupin was born Nov. 21, 1976, in Metaline Falls, the daughter of Bill and Carol Grant. She grew up in the Ione community and graduated from Selkirk High School in 1995. She then attended Spokane Community College obtaining a certificate in the secretarial field.

Maupin worked at several jobs in the community, most recently as a teller at Mountain West Bank. Prior to that, at Cathy's Cafe in Metaline Falls. Maupin enjoyed the outdoors, with fishing, camping and gardening her most rewarding activities. She took great pride in her home, spending many hours planning, shopping and decorating to achieve the warm and cozy atmosphere both her and Jory wanted. Time spent with family and friends was truly cherished, especially during the holidays.
All who knew Maupin will miss her warm "glow" and upbeat personality. She made us smile a lot more.

Life is Good Amy Kathleen Kiss (Buchanan), 31, died April 25, 2008 after fighting a courageous battle against Melanoma. Amy spent the last five years of her life in Metaline Falls, Washington, where she said, Five years in Metaline Falls is better than a lifetime anywhere else. All those who knew Amy were struck by her caring nature, her witty humor, and her tremendous bravery in the face of devastating adversity.
Amy was born October 12, 1976 in Marianna, Florida. After graduating from Coeur dAlene High School in 1995, Amy continued her education at Eastern Washington University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 2001.
She first worked as a teacher at Lake Stevens Middle School in Everett, WA. In 2002 she found her home as a science teacher at Selkirk Jr./Sr. High School, in Ione. One of Amys greatest pleasures was teaching, and she was beloved by her students, who admired her as an engaging, demanding, and compassionate teacher. When people commented on Amys amazing ability to connect with her young students, she inevitably responded, Thats because I have the sense of humor of junior high boy. Even Amys battle with cancer did not discourage her; in August of 2006, Amy earned a Masters of Art in Education from Seattle Pacific University, and she continued to teach at Selkirk until her health made that impossible in 2008.
On December 20, 2003, Amy married the love of her life, Ryan Kiss. Amy and Ryan enriched their lives with the birth of their daughter, Mary Alice in June of 2005. With her mothers feisty attitude and her fathers red hair, Mary immediately became the light of Amys life.
Amy, Ryan, and Mary found their lives changed forever in May of 2006, when Amy was diagnosed with stage three Melanoma. With the support of Ryan and many other family members and friends, Amy waged a fierce battle against this fast growing cancer.
Amy is survived by her adoring husband, Ryan; daughter, Mary Alice; mother, Cheryl Buchanan (OR); father, Buch Buchanan and his wife, Kim (TN); sister, Sarah Buchanan (OR); parents in-law, Steven and Nancy Kiss; and numerous other family members, friends, and fishing buddies.
Over the past four years Amy was passionate about four things: her love for Ryan and Mary, fishing, teaching her students, and educating others about the risk of sun exposure and the prevention of Melanoma. To learn more about the prevention of melanoma please visit www.melenoma.com.
Funeral Services will be held at noon on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Metaline Falls, WA. Family and friends are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.sherman-knapp.com. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home and Crematory in Newport, WA is in charge of arrangements.
I heard today that there is a fund set up at Mountain West bank in Ione for a scholarship to be given to this year's graduating class through, I believe 2013's graduating class, which would be this year's 7th grade. Amy requested that this be done rather than flowers or monetary donations from what I understand.
I just found this while playing on the computer thought some of you may want to see it. It is Amy Kiss's myspace. People have left many comments about her and to her on it

Please help me I am a mother of a teenage daughter
Brad did indeed graduate. He and I were great friends in Jr. high, then kinda' went separate ways in high school. A few years after graduating he ended up in San Diego and we became great friends again. He moved to Nevada, then to Spokane where he subsequently died in a motorcycle crash. One thing about Brad, if he had to go, he wanted to go on a bike.
When I graduated, there was a (I hope the name is correct) Haugen (sp) memorial scholarship that was given out. I cannot remember the details, so if I am omitting anything, or just plain wrong, someone please correct me.
I cannot recall his first name. I believed he died during a basketball game (1970's), and I believe he was a relative (uncle maybe) to Amber Pichette, possibly on her mom's side??? Amber, I know you are on here, can you clarify?
Once again, if I am way off on this one, please correct me.
Jim Haugen did die on the basketball court during a game. Dave Beacham died in an automobile accident and there is a memorial for him also. I don't know the years. V

Mr. Batch worked in construction as an apprentice carpenter for his uncle, Martin Batch<>.
He enjoyed rap music, playing basketball, bike riding and skate boarding.
Survivors include his mother, Marlene Batch, and a sister, Holly Slater, both of Ione; his father, Paul Bockman<> of Spokane; his grandfather, Melvin Marty of Ione; and his grandmother, Jewel Hammerstrom<> of Virginia.
Service for John ``Lee'' Mathews, a former teacher in Metalline Falls, Wash., will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cutter Theater in Metaline Falls. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Mathews, who was born in Marfa<>, Texas, was a longtime resident of Metaline Falls before moving to Spokane seven years ago. He died Jan. 8 after he was hit by a car while walking across North River Drive near Division. He was 52.
He graduated from Arizona State University in 1971 with degrees in elementary education, anthropology and history. He worked as a teacher for 23 years, starting his teaching career in Phoenix and then teaching the fifth-grade in Metaline Falls from 1975 to 1995.
Mr. Mathews had worked for West Coast Hospitalities most recently.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Marcia; a son, Chris Mathews of Spokane; a daughter, Julie Fristad<> of Ione, Wash.; a brother, Grant Mathews of Lakeside, Calif.; his mother, Una<> Mathews of Spokane; and two grandsons.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lillian Bailey Elementary School in Metaline Falls.
I remember hearing about Martin's passing, that was really sad. I didn't know Mr. Matthews had passed away until I found Chris on Myspace, I was heartbroken when I found out.
I remember Mr. Mathews passing, we were staying downtown Spokane, and Dolly's aunts (through marriage) brother was working with him at the same place. We seen him the same day and he told us about a coworker getting hit by a car. Tragic.
I remember reading about Joe Steffens (Wade and Jenny's dad) dying in an accident at the Ponderay plant....I saw the obit in the Spokesman archives, I can post it if anyone wants to see it....
the name Tammy Sharp sounds familiar...is she the girl that was in the car accident in 91? that happened right before i started at selkirk in my freshmen year i believe it was at the first of the year or early spring....

Yes. Tammy Sharp was killed in an car accent, her and Jason Sergeant were on there way to Ione and were hit head on near Box canyon damn. Tammy I passed at the seen, Jason was badly injured I believe the driver of the other vehicle walked with minor injuries. I remember Heart Flight going over my house that night.
Lynn Slocumb, principal in the early 80's, a man that I loved and respected, succumbed to heart disease a few years back. He taught me a lot about a bunch of different things. I think of him daily. V
Mr. Slocumb, or Bosley from "Charlie's Angels" (the T.V. series, not the movies for you young'uns). I remember his first day. We had an assembly for his introduction and the first thing out of his mouth was: "I'm Mr. Slocumb, not Bosley".
I had to go to Spokane once with him and his wife for some school business. We had to make a stop (his wife needed something) and he bought me the Metallica "Master of Puppets" cassette. Yeah...cassette...
I always found it odd that Mr. Slocumb's first name was Lynn. His replacement was a woman named Marty...
I was a friend of shawn flannigan I never had the chance to meet Tammy. I spent houra listening about tammy. Even threw a couple rocks at cars a W rock. I hope God can bless them both, they never had a chance.
